SNAPPED is intended to be a protective aura against those who want to see you fail and those who commit themselves (and others if they can) to misunderstanding you.
SNAPPED is also intended to remind the wearer that their value is not defined by the external, whether this is how the wearer presents themselves to the world or how it’s perceived.
These same lessons have been taught within the ballroom community for decades, despite persistent indignities from a temperamental social climate.
Design intent
I designed SNAPPED as a middle finger to microaggressions we experience, when strangers and loved ones take a skewed and entitled sense of our place in the world. SNAPPED is a direct spotlight on these people, and their cowardly approach to power (extractive) instead of moving with intention and EQ (internal). This is something I notice in stan culture, where public figures contend with distorted narratives and an assortment of many crossed boundaries.
SNAPPED is also a middle finger to the tall poppy syndrome in British culture. It is not arrogant to be healthily confident or aware of one’s potential, yet we're taught to hold ourselves down and to hide our ambition.
I chose the name SNAPPED because yes this is something ballroom has done through performance. But I wanted to highlight what ballroom has done on an emotional level both individually and collectively- the absolute brilliance and resilience it has taken to survive and get to this point.
Scent memory // actually smells like
SNAPPED evokes the glamour of the catwalk, the powerful purpose of performance, and the liberation of unapologetic self-expression.
SNAPPED has a resinous and herby open of frankincence, myrrh (biblical, slightly blasphemous) and bay. This dries down into a warm and earthy woody amber blend of cedarwood, rosewood and agarwood. The vanilla and nutmeg base is subtly woody, creamy and sweet. The overall effect is a dryly dramatic affair with an echo of the animalic.
